LOCAL CLOSURES:

Sept. 13-16: LYNDEN SR 546 to close for four nights for paving work beginning Sunday. Crews will make needed pavement repairs along a 4.5-mile stretch of the highway. EB and WB SR 546 will close at 8 p.m. each night and reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning in the following sections:
Sunday night, Sept. 13: Between Van Buren Road and SR 9/Nooksack Road (mileposts 7 to 8)
Monday night, Sept. 14: Between Northwood Road and Trapline Road (mileposts 3 to 6)
Tuesday night, Sept. 15: Between Northwood Road and Trapline Road (mileposts 3 to 6)
Wednesday night, Sept. 16: Between Trapline Road and Van Buren Road (mileposts 6 to 7)

Sept 14-17: the new fish passage along a tributary to Nookachamps Creek (milepost 49) east of Mount Vernon, crews began returning water to the channel. This is a significant step as we restore natural stream conditions at the location. Continue to expect daytime lane reductions with alternating northbound and southbound traffic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Combined the two new fish-passable structures will restore about 2 miles of natural habitat for bull trout, coho salmon, resident trout, steelhead and sea-run cutthroat.

Sept 14-18: Daytime Closure of Alm Road – Whatcom County Public Works will close Alm Road at Bridge 308, between Highway 9 and Gillies Road, September 14–18, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily for bridge repairs. The road will reopen outside closure hours. Work is weather-dependent and subject to change. Questions: 360-778-6400.

Sep 15: SR 20 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, between the east side of the Swinomish Channel bridges and SR 536/Memorial Highway (mileposts 51 to 55). Both EB and WB lanes and the right shoulders will close at different times during work hours.

Sept 8 – for 2 to 3 weeks: San Juan County’s Public Works Department is announcing its annual summer road striping schedule beginning on Tuesday, and lasting approximately two to three weeks. Pavement markings, including centerlines, shoulder markings, arrows, and more, are critical features of any safe and effective roadway, and it takes routine maintenance to ensure that these markings are clear, visible, and accurate. Until Sept 24: The SR9 lane reduction north of Sedro-Woolley has been extended 10 days and is now expected to end Thursday morning, Sept. 24, due to unforeseen construction issues.During the continuous lane reduction, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will install an 18-foot box culvert beneath SR 9 to remove a barrier blocking fish migration along a tributary to Hansen Creek.

Until September: Southbound I-5 traffic shifts onto a bypass road south of Bellingham: The shift of southbound Interstate 5 to the temporary two-lane bypass road south of Bellingham has been rescheduled to Monday night, June 15, to complete necessary work before the shift. The northbound I-5 shift to a temporary bypass road will be rescheduled to a later date Southbound traffic will continue to use the bypass through September

October 12: Collins Road (County Road # 63310) at Rail Grade Crossing will be closed and such closure shall continue thereafter unless and until further ordered by the Board. Additional information may be obtained from Given Kutz, Traffic Engineering, 360-416-1400 is the contact person for this issue.

Thru Oct 17: Concrete Sauk Valley Road #08000 at milepost 13.3 – The roadway will be closed for approximately eighty (80) calendar days to allow work to be completed on the South Osterman Creek Culvert Repair Project No. EO214-5.

Thru Oct 23: South Skagit Highway #07000 from MP 5.3 to MP 5.4 closed to all through traffic including emergency vehicles. The roadway will be closed for approximately sixty (60) calendar days to allow work to be completed on the Stevens Creek Fish Passage Improvement Project #ES07000-15

Until Early 2027: the State Route 536 Skagit River Bridge/Division Street Bridge will close to eastbound traffic through the duration of a project to repaint the historic bridge. All passenger and freight vehicles need to follow the detour until the project finishes in early 2027

Until July 2027: Year-long SR 20 roundabout project south of Anacortes begins work 19 days of single-lane traffic coming to project area in mid-August. Preliminary work is now underway on an intersection improvement project to enhance safety along State Route 20 by building a new roundabout at Campbell Lake Road. Most construction for the new roundabout south of Anacortes will be complete in July 2027, weather permitting.

OPENINGS:

Sept 17: At Chuckanut Creek, construction continues on the new northbound and southbound I-5 bridges. Crews recently set bridge support beams for the northbound structure and completed concrete pours on the southbound bridge. Work on the bridges will continue over the coming weeks, as crews build the remaining structural elements and prepare for opening the southbound bridge Sept. 17. Work at these two sites is part of a project that is removing and replacing 17 outdated culverts near Lake Samish.
